Lake Como is ever-changing: each season offers completely different sceneries and presents the lake in a unique and unforgettable way. Another great opportunity for culture vultures is to visit some of enchanting villas on the lake which remain open to welcome and fascinate visitors even during the coldest season of the year.

VILLA MONASTERO – VARENNA

Owned by the Province of Lecco, Villa Monastero is one of the main historical and botanical sites of the area. The Villa houses a museum, a convention centre and is surrounded by a splendid botanical garden with almost 2km of lakeshore.

In December the museum and botanical garden are open from 10am to 5pm from 3 to 11, on 17, 18, 24 and from 26 to 31.
In January the museum and botanical garden are open from 10am to 5pm on the following days: from 1 to 8 and on 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29.

VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO – LENNO

Elegant and romantic 18th century mansion with a stunning garden, one of the most fascinating and scenic locations of Lake Como. It was donated to the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) in 1988 by its last owner, Guido Monzino. In addition to its amazing interior, Villa Balbianello is truly spectacular also thanks to its gardens characterized by a rigorous Italian style and perfection typical of French villas, as well as the loggia, a magnificent terrace surrounded by arches and overlooking the lake.

In December, Villa del Balbianello and its park are open to the public from 10am to 5pm with last admission to the park at 4pm, on the following days: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 16, 17, 18, 20, 23, 26, 27, 30 and 31.

VILLA BERNASCONI – CERNOBBIO

A welcoming museum with a modern, multisensory, innovative and interactive cultural experience. The Museum is defined as a “house that speaks”, in which the villa itself tells its story and that of the characters who lived in it, starting with Davide Bernasconi, founder of the homonymous silk weaving factory which was active until 1971.

In December, Villa Bernasconi is open from 10am to 5pm on the following days: from 2 to 5, from 8 to 12, from 16 to 19 and on 23, 24, 30 and 31.

VILLA CARLOTTA – TREMEZZO

A grand residence dating back to the 17th century, and famous in particular for its immense and lush botanical garden, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. A place of rare beauty where Nature and the works of man have coexisted in perfect harmony for over three hundred years. The museum houses masterpieces by artists such as Canova, Hayez and Thorvaldsen, in an extremely elegant setting that also enhances the private rooms of Princess Charlotte of Sachsen-Meiningen, to whom the Villa owes its name.

The season of Villa Carlotta ends in November 2022, but during winter it’s possible to visit Villa Carlotta in groups of min. 15 persons with prior reservation, accompanied or by the Educational Services of Villa Carlotta or by an external guide.

Villa Carlotta also offers online thematic tours and workshops so you can learn about the Villa and discover its reach artistic and cultural heritage even digitally!
